Question for Dorie:
Is there a specific song, song lyric, or music genre that is particularly meaningful and moving for you? What is it and in what way(s) has it had an impact?
Dorie's Response:
What I love about music is the physical experience of resonance, vibration, tone, harmony, attunement, and voice. I share here a favorite verse from a song called “Let the Windchimes Chime.”
“So with humble hearts, let us seek to heal the ancient injuries and sorrows. It’s not too late to try!
With both grit and grace, we will face the mysteries of tomorrow, live our legacy, until it’s time to say goodbye…”
You won’t know the tune because it hasn’t been made public yet, but it will be in 2026!
Yes, I wrote the song. I was invited to write about aging into my 70’s as I experienced first-hand the older adult development stage of “life review.”  Growing up with music as one of my family’s love languages, I started writing songs on piano and guitar at age 12. I’ve been the lucky recipient of many musical influences over my lifetime, from cowboy ballads to classical to Motown to Protestant hymns to protest songs. Although many styles of music appeal to me, at heart I am a folk musician because I am so drawn to story-telling and the way music can express the poignant truths of being human.
I feel fulfilled and complete when I create a song, such as a lullaby (for all three children and granddaughter), a blessing (for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs), homage to those who have passed on, stories of my communities, or wishes for the world. It’s a special way of giving back, of sending and receiving love at the same time. (For those interested, I produced a CD in the 2000’s -now on Apple Music and Spotify  “Handin’ Down the Love”) - and will be recording a new album later this year.)
