#279: Sweeping the Path

I love when a meaningful symbol or lesson portrays itself in a simple act of daily life. I've noticed how at times, as I'm not even searching for one, a new revelation reveals itself in a seemingly humdrum experience, inspiring me to think a little differently and maybe even apply the realization elsewhere. Corey's blog somehow made the quotation by Gracie Gold pop into my head that reads, "Always wear a smile because you never know who is watching." I interpret this as, we may not realize who sees us or when, but we do have the potential to leave an impact on those passing by, whether the magnitude be large or small. And I love the experience you share here with your neighbor, Corey. Thank you.

Sweeping the Path

I noticed my neighbor communing with his yard the other day. The simplicity in the brushes of his broom, and peace with the labor of lifting the leaves into piles inspired me. I told him so. And then I got to work on my own place.

My toil wasn’t terribly different. I went through the same process he did: lots of repetitive, but focused work. Almost a tunnel vision, as I kept my mind on my goal. I even mimicked his method of bagging, a novel style that was effective, to boot.

As I finished, I admired his clean yard, and curb. Then turned back to take in mine. Not a leaf in sight. Our contribution to a beautiful block was complete, however ephemeral. In those moments before the next big gust of wind, it was perfect.

It occurred to me that maybe this is how big Change happens.

Not with a grand proclamation. Nor a sweeping change.

Someone sees someone else practicing peacefully and consistently. Their inner torch gets lit with the same flame, and they perform their own practice in their part of the world, whether across the street, or across the planet.

But I wouldn’t have seen it if I’d been moving any faster. Maybe I would have learned even more of his method if I’d been moving slower.

Sweeping the path is another opportunity to be humbled.
